Do a Happy Dance: A Couple More (Mac and Macarons) Popular Options for the Vegan and/or Gluten-Free Set

VEGAN-EATING, gluten-free consuming, time-constrained, health-conscious individuals, rejoice! There are two more options to add to your meal plan: a savory and a dessert.

It is safe to say that macaroni and cheese (or mac&cheese or simply, mac) has been having a moment these last few years.

This comfort food dish is a popular item on many a menu at restaurants, events and grocery aisles, though not often enough as a vegan, gluten-free option.

Now another company making it so is Chickapea, with its Organic Vegan Mac. Chickapea is the pasta company founded by onetime health food store owner Shelby Taylor.

Its mission is to make available nutritious, delicious, easy-to-make foods for finicky eaters and those with health restrictions and concerns.


The organic vegan mac is, of course, dairy-free. Standing in for cheese is a creamy sweet potato and pumpkin sauce. Some of the other ingredients that make the dish include organic chickpea flour, organic red lentil flour, organic vegan seasoning, organic cauliflower powder and sea salt. Good stuff.

Perhaps after Chickapea’s mac&cheese the meal can proceed to dessert. Just the thing might be Les Macarons Duverger.

These are not your ordinary macarons. Created by Claire Becker, née Duverger, they are made from natural, organic and gluten-free ingredients.

And, yes, they are authentic French macarons. CB began making her confections for friends and family before she scaled up to the general public.

They are available in 20 flavors, not including seasonal varieties such as pumpkin pie. Regular flavors run to Blueberry lavender, Chocolate, Cookies and cream, Hazelnut brittle, Lemon, Orange truffle, Red velvet and Salted caramel.

The macarons also come in quite the splashy color palette (no chemicals) – an elevated version of lemon-yellow and orange-orange – and are a by-product of CB’s background as a painting conservationist.

Day 4 TFF2016: 'Bugs' and the Many Splendid Ways to Feast on Them

IN the mood for Chicken w/garlic crumbs in buffalo worms? How about fried noodles in black soldier fly larvae?

Not your cup of tea? It may be one day if the world fills up with too many people and there is not enough beef, for instance, to go around.

With this very plausible outcome in mind, “Bugs” makes a very compelling and sometimes queasiness-inducing case for the West to also turn to the world of edible insects as a future food source.

From Andreas Johnsen, the documentary has its world premiere this evening at the 15th annual Tribeca Film Festival. The engaging guides in “Bugs,” chef Ben Reade and researcher Josh Evans, trot the world over meeting people who eat a steady diet of insects of all kinds.

Perhaps maggot cheese is not your thing. Nor is tabouli with locusts. But it is very difficult to dismiss “Bugs” during a moment in time when the "industrialized" food of the West is making people sick and killing them.

IT’S a new year – HAPPY NEW YEAR!!! – and it has swept in some changes at our humble, little publication. For starters, we’ve tweaked our name.

You can now call us The Wright Wreport featuring VEVLYN’S PEN or The Wright Wreport, for short. Like it? We hope so. We sure do!

This new year will bring other changes, too. Heretofore, my byline has been YOURS TRULY and has only appeared on cowritten articles. Henceforth, my articles (and photos), such as this one, will carry the simple byline, V.W.

Yet another change is a renovation. More specifically, expect a new and improved layout. This is yet months off, though, so consider this only an early-bird heads up.

Though the name has changed, the high standards of journalism that are our stock in trade remain the same. Our address is also unchanged: vevlynspen.com. @NYCWFF 2015: Day 2 BBD's Judged Winner of Burger Bash, But the People Choose Black Tap and Really Like EMMY

MANY have cheese. And, of course, pork. Collards cole slaw? Yes. Bone marrow is in a couple. Then, there is the one with grits on the side.

All of this culinary convo is about the Blue Moon Burger Bash, a crowd favorite and the main event on the second day 2 of the New York City Wine & Food Festival (No. 8). For the first time, the burger bash features an official mac&cheese emporium, the Smack Down.

The judge’s winner of the burger bash: Second-time contender Ralph Perrazzo for the BBD’s Steamed Double with diced onions and pickles. On the side, BBD’s Garbage Fries (a little bit of everything from the kitchen).

The favorite of Yours Truly is The Standard Cheese Burger from The Standard Grill Why? With lettuce, tomato, pickle and sauce, it is a reminder of the classic American hamburger. No frills, thank you very much.

The people’s choice winner: Black Tap Craft Burgers & Beer by Joe Isidori. Runners-up are Shake Shack and another favorite of mine, Matthew Hyland’s EMMY Burger (from Emily).

It boasts dry-aged beef, EMMY sauce, sautéed onions, Grafton cheddar and cornichon on a Tom Cat pretzel bun. That melted cheddar takes it to another good place.
