MBFW Day 1 Snapshots: Say Hello to Ebony White

HEAD’S UP: It's Fashion Week, baby! Who's ready? We're ready! And we have a slight tweak to share. Of course, we still endeavor to provide a roundup of the best, worst and most interesting Yours Truly&Co. witnesses, from trends to sightings to the rather unusual/bizarre. The tweak has been inspired by Twitter. The coverage will focus, as has become the custom, on what truly inspires or what is so painfully hideous that it is remarkable. However, we will tell that story in 50 words or less. Yes, 50. Or less. Ready? Let the games begin ...

On Deck today, Day 1: The Art Institute of New York City, BCBG Max Azria, BLK DNM, Bureau V, Candela, Creatures of the Wind, Costello Tagliapietra, David Tlale, Derek Lam, Desigual, Ebony White, Fashion Palette, Honor, Jorge Arteaga, Marissa Webb, Nicholas K, Richard Chai Love, Supima, Tadashi Shoji, Tanya Taylor, Tocca

EVERYTHING she's been holding in is, in part, the inspiration for Ebony White's debut collection. What a statement! What a name!

The result will either be scare-ray or sublime. Or something in between. Or something totally other. In any case, it happens this afternoon. The New York-based designer is rising to notice on the strength of her appearance on the Rihanna and Style Network show, "Styled to Rock." EW, who has worked for the likes of Baby Phat, Calvin Klein and DKNY, says her biggest style influence is her mother. Such a good daughter, no? (See video at top).

Incidentally, welcome to Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week New York. Today marks the official start, though designers - Zac Posen (bridge line), Erin Fetherston and Ivana Helsinki among them - have been showing their Spring-Summer 14 collections since Tuesday. (See video of IH SS14 collection look book below. Inspired by the bridges of Madison County, it was shot in Iowa).

Heralding in the official start is stalwart Nicholas K. It is not clear what has stirred the creative juices of brother-sister design team, Nicholas Kunz and Christopher Kunz. However, it will indeed be a surprise if the looks don't tend toward a surfeit of layers and sophisticated simplicity.

The week officially shutters on 12 Sept. Stay tuned for comments throughout the week.
