Scrumptious Taste of France / Foundations Sound

BY NEIL WOLFSON

28 and 29 September 2013/NEW YORK – THE Taste of France Show
took over Bryant Park during the weekend, bringing French culture, cuisine, tourism and technology to bedazzled and bemused New Yorkers.

The extravaganza was much larger than last year’s inaugural, which took place on a pier in the Meatpacking District. This sophomore year saw a crowd numbering near 100,000 over two days. (See video at top).

Attendees happily sipped Champagne and feasted on succulent lamb shank, and Steak Provencal while can-can dancers evoked the spirit of the Folies Bergere in the VIP tent.

In the wider park, a rescue operation involved French bulldogs and Metropolitan Opera singers were among the performances on the main stage. Many satisfied souls soaked up the Gallic oh la la on an autumn weekend magnifique.

NYFF 51 Day 3: 'Le Week-End' Almost Sinks a Marriage

HEAD’S UP: The 51st New York Film Festival is off to the races, and so are we. This year, we borrow a page from Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week New York coverage, which borrowed a page from Twitter (http://www.ow.ly/pmqvr). To that end, all film reviews / comments will be 100 words or less. Yes, 100. Or less. Ready? Lights. Camera. ACTION! ...

IN Roger Michell’s “Le Week-End,” a British couple journeys to Paris to celebrate 30 years of marriage.

Enter Meg (the illustrious Lindsay Duncan who also appears in “About Time,” which has its North American premiere at The 51st New York Film Festival) and Nick (Jim Broadbent.)

They spend the weekend bickering about nothing to the point of a breech, forcing circumstances to intervene in a most delightful way. Minutiae-heavy “Le Week-End,” in its U.S. premiere today, teeters toward boring but is saved by energy-bearing Jeff Goldblum as a colleague of university professor, Nick.

Here’s a one for folks over 50.

NYFF51: Opening With Wave-Inducing 'Captain Phillips'

IF there were ever a film over which the hawks and doves can duke it out, it is “Captain Phillips.”

The film, which opens The 51st New York Film Festival in its world premiere this evening, concerns the 2009 incident in which several young Somalis take over a ship near the waters of their country. To call these desperadoes pirates is stretching the term to the extreme. A more likely moniker is “shipjackers.”

The film is based on the book by Captain Rich Phillips who was at the helm of the Maersk Alabama cargo ship when the hapless, but dangerous young men commandeered it from the confines of their rickety boat – hardly a seaworthy vessel.

Well, from there it is what the media says happened, what the U.S. military says happened, of course, what the captain says happened and what actually happened. The Somalis? Clearly, they had no say. The truth of the matter is in there somewhere. (See video at top).

In any case, “Captain Phillips,” which opens widely on 11 Oct., tells the tale from the point of view of the captain himself. Overall, the film is well-acted. Tom Hanks is in fine form as Phillips; ditto for the four Minneapolis-based, first-time actors who portray his captors, Barkhad Abdi, Barkhad Abdirahman, Faysal Ahmed and Mahet M. Ali.

The action scenes, many shot with a hand-held camera, are riveting and the kind of work that director-documentarian Paul Greengrass (“The Borne Ultimatum) excels at.

At too many intervals, however, “Captain Phillips” drags; the pacing is slow. It is boring to put a fine point on it. The film can be cut by 30 minutes and still retain its impact. Speaking of impact, the scenes featuring the mighty U.S. military have a stock feel, as if they have been lifted from “The Hunt for Red October” or some similar film in which the military figures prominently.

Furthermore, the military scenes are a bit obscene. The response to a ragtag ring of bandits is so outsized as to induce nausea. Think about it. Three rickety fishing vessels and warships of the world’s current greatest military. This is where the hawks and doves will do battle.

On one side will be those who see the millions of tax dollars gone to fund such a dubious operation at the expense of so many important programs that go unfunded in this country. The other side will be the cheerleaders who see such a response as necessary to protect U.S. interests and to send a strong signal to other malcontents who would dare muck with America. In other words, “bring it on!”

Not a bad way to open a film festival. Thankfully, much of the fare at NYFF51 is not as icy hot and spicy as “Captain Phillips.” The closing film, Spike Jonze's "Her" about the role of electronic devices in our lives, has eyebrows raised, though lips are sealed. Among films that have loosened lips is Steve McQeeen’s “12 Years a Slave.” It, too, is based on a memoir. This one by Soloman Northup (portrayed by Chiwetel Ejiofar) who chronicles his abduction from Washington, D.C in 1841 and subsequent sale into slavery.

The film also stars Benedict Cumberbatch and frequent SM collaborator, Michael Fassbender.

On a lighter note is “About Time, ” Richard Curtis’ delightful take on time travel. Like, “Love, Actually,” it has a large cast, including Bill Nighy. Best described as a black comedy is Catherine Breillat’s autobiographical "Abuse of Weakness" ("Abus de Faiblesse.")

NYFF51, which shutters on 13 Oct. with TBA encore screenings, is the first in a generation or so that does not have Richard Pena at the head of the selection committee. It shows in some of the selections, such as “About Time,” which has too much levity for the typical NYFF film. Another two are Philippe Garrel’s “Jealousy (“La Jalousie”) and Tsai Ming-liang’s “Stray Dogs” (“Jiao You”).

The former reads too fluffy and inconsequential, while the latter has an amateurish, school project vibe.

In New York, Fashion Is Very Much in Style

BY MARIE T. DRISCOLL

NEW
Yorkers were still returning from an extended Labor Day holiday, marking the official end of summer and a return to worldly matters, with hardly a moment to spare before paying an eight-day homage to fashion.

Steeped in theatricality and joie de vivre, the beginning of the fashion season is eagerly anticipated by those who hope for a turn in trend, or new silhouette, genuine creativity and commercial potential.

Perennial favorites Carolina Herrera, Diane von Furstenberg, Calvin Klein, Mark Jacobs and Ralph Lauren shared the spotlight with newcomers British brand, All Saints, and Israeli Alon Livné. (See video of CH at top and video of AL show below).

First of all it’s wonderful to see so many New Yorkers or people in New York wearing something other than basic, boring black. Just Love It!, seeing folks channeling their inner fashionista in all manner of color and style. The guys donned bowties and bowlers; the girls stepped out in everything, from flowers to skulls, and of course, my favorite basics – metallics and animal prints.

Second, the shows had something for every style, so there is no palpable trend. Geometrical silhouettes jockeyed along with tulip skirts, bias cuts and pencil skirts. Girls, it’s your choice. Know your body and dress accordingly. The lack of a solid trend hurts commercially, therefore look for a season of more accessories, with spending trending toward jewelry, handbags, shoes and booties.

I did see faux fur and vegan leather (remember pleather?!). Also spotted were bare midriffs and cutouts (marginal at best) and higher waistlines. This could suggest the start of a trend. We’ll see.

Third, RL and CH are the height of elegance. You just can’t go wrong when they dress you. And J Crew is so wearable, so accessible – and talk about vanity sizing (even I’m a 2)! Thank you Mickey and Jenna for elevating fabrications for the masses. (See video of J Crew show below).

I only attended half of the shows I planned to see. The lines were long and the tents were full. Fashion is alive and well in NYC!

I can’t wait until February to experience it all over again.

MBFW Day7: A Very Fitting End (in the Tents)

HEAD’S UP: It's Fashion Week, baby! Who's ready? We're ready! And we have a slight tweak to share. Of course, we still endeavor to provide a roundup of the best, worst and most interesting Yours Truly&Co. witnesses, from trends to sightings to the rather unusual/bizarre. The tweak has been inspired by Twitter. The coverage will focus, as has become the custom, on what truly inspires or what is so painfully hideous that it is remarkable. However, we will tell that story in 50 words or less. Yes, 50. Or less. Ready? Let the games begin ...

Day 7 (SOME of the players at the tents and elsewhereAnna Sui, Betsey Johnson, B. Michael America, Clover Canyon, Bibhu Mohapatra, Brandon Sun, Dion Lee, Emerge, FrontRow, J. Mendel, Malan by Malan Breton, Meskita, Michael Kors, Milly by Michelle Smith, Nanette Lepore, Osklen, Rachel Zoe, T. Tandon

SHOWING
them how it’s done!

IMG, the outfit that produces Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week has got to get some shows in the tents on Thursday, the last official day of fashion week.

So anti-climactic to end on a whimper, which often happens on Wednesday night, the last night of shows in the tents. No so, at B. Michael America, the last one standing.

A security guard standing next to Yours Truly watching the show pronounced that he was looking at “nothing special.” He was not off the mark, though it was a competent effort with some dashes of spice and a high-energy presentation format.

If there was one highlight of the show, it was the last model in the last outfit. She undertook a few masterful turns, showing off to good effect the silk lavender mermaid dress without bringing undue attention to herself. What can a body say? The girl has some moves that other girls should copy. Awed audience showed its appreciation. A back to the future moment when New York fashion shows were a spectacle, in a good way. (See video above.)

On Deck today, Last Day: Alhassan Toure, Ana Segura, Calvin Klein, Just Dance with Boy Meets Girl, Edwing D’Angelo, Ralph Lauren

Oscar de la Renta

PERT collection that traverses several decades. Something for every age, every body type. A-line dresses with cinched waist and flared skirt for curves. Delightful prints, bright colors. Fetching lace series not without dowdies. Debit, too, cap-sleeved dress with folds bearing a hideous purple floral - partycrasher! Bumble bee end. (See video above). - YOURS TRULY

ZEN master of fashion rocks the tents with extreme elegance. The tone of the show is set by a male ballet dancer leaping down the runway. Following are magnificently understated gowns with perfect draping that the fashion world has come to expect from the Malaysian maestro. All were wowed! - NEIL WOLFSON

PARTICULARLY festive day at the House. The new collection, of course. Signature stuff. Crafted well with all of the expected veteran appointments. Another reason for bubbly: first boutique. A staid party last night opened its doors in a tony section of the Upper East Side. - YOURS TRULY

MBFW Day 5: Sensuality and Sensibility. Mining the Earth.

3.1 Phillip Lim

FRESH off of his collaboration with Target, Phillip Lim takes his 3.1 eponymous line to the geological depths. Interesting discoveries, particularly the metallic skirts. Others (the whites) didn't seem so earthen, but that probably wasn't the designer's intention. After all, these nuggets are for the marketplace. (See video above). - YOURS TRULY

Day 5
(SOME of the players at the tents and elsewhere): 3.1 Phillip Lim, Adam Lippes, Alice + Olivia, Araks, Assembly, Barbara Tfank, Carolina Herrera, Concept Korea, Czar by Cesar Galindo, Donna Karan New York, Falguni and Shane Peacock, Hache, Holmes & Yang, Karen Walker, Kaufmanfranco, Libertine, Maki Oh, Mathieu Mirano, Ohne Titel, Ovadia & Sons, Pamella Roland, Reem Acra, Rosie Assoulin, Theyskens' Theory, Thom Browne, Tim Coppens, Tommy Hilfiger, Tribune Standard, Victoria, Victoria Beckham, Zero + Maria Cornejoe

The air is redolent of love (Libertine) and lust (Falguni and Shane Peacock). Meanwhile, these guys (Concept Korea) mean business and that's a good thing. Elsewhere, some striking discoveries are made (3.1 Phillip Lim).

Libertine

LOVE. Yes, Yes, Yes! (or Oui, Oui, Oui!) Color. Bling. Humor. Swing. This is style I'll wrap myself in. Fashion that speaks to the girl in me, who just loves pretty things that are so necessary. Three dots on right cheek of models, like Pierrot the melancholy clown. No tears  here. - MARIE T. DRISCOLL

Concept Korea

LEE Suk Tae and Park Young Soo, two of the four designers showing under Concept Korea, are names to remember. Both hit the bull's eye with their visions. The former the style of boys and girls around the global village; the latter structural avant-garde overlaid with chicness and elegance. - YOURS TRULY

Falguni and Shane Peacock

THE lusty Femme Fatale, Dominatrix, Vixen, Sex Kitten sister girl. Regardless of her handle, here's a one who is dressed for various occasions to kill and thrill, right down to the surprising / disturbing brace flanking her leg where on a regular woman a simple garter suffices. - YOURS TRULY

MBFW Day 4: Attention, Please. Class Is About to Start.

Day 4
(SOME of the players at the tents and elsewhere): Band of Outsiders, Creatures of Comfort, Custo Barcelona, Delpozo, Designer's Review, Derek Lam, Diane Von Furstenberg, DKNY, Edun, Emerson, Giulietta, Jeremy Lang, Joanna Mastroianni, Lela Rose, Mark McNairy New Amsterdam, Patrik Ervell, Ralph Rucci, Richard Seco, Thakoon, Threeasfour, Tracy Reese, Trina Turk, Victoria Beckham, Vivienne Tam, Y-3, Yigal Azrouel, Zac Posen

AS the week marches on the talent swells. A moment of the master class (Ralph Rucci, Custo Barcelona, Joanna Mastroianni) and stalwart veterans (Vivienne Tam, Tracy Reese, Diane von Furstenberg, DKNY). It was a fine day.

Custo Barcelona

Photos courtesy of Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week.

A feminine side this season, most notable in chiffon and shifts and jackets with more construction. The signature print motif informs every stitch in varying degrees. Men are an afterthought. Annoyingly generic club music. Not the best stuff from Custo Dalmau, but some pretty good stuff, nevertheless. It's a print. - YOURS TRULY

Diane von Furstenberg

THE collection is called Oasis. To that end, the fit of the clothes is loose and easy; the fabrics non-fussy and travel-ready like the jet-setter they attract. Colors more muted than bright. Innovative? No, but solid and eye-pleasing. With NAOMI bringing up the rear. - YOURS TRULY

Emerson
Photos by Neil Wolfson and Arun Nevader/Getty Images.

THE most interesting outfits are op art-oriented. Black and white and somewhat optically obnoxious but still eye-catching. Toward the end of the show, gowns have interesting, multi-tiered floral motifs. Large bouquets in the hair that kind of rock my world. The soundtrack is Ramones punk rock. It is a very youthful collection, wearable by no one older than 25. - NEIL WOLFSON

Joanna Mastroianni

ISN'T it a piece of heaven to witness a master crafter at work? Pay attention, students and designer wannabes. Take notes. Watch. Learn. (See the video at top). - YOURS TRULY

DKNY
Photos courtesy of Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week.

A retrospective, marking 25 years of the label. (The afterparty is tonight!). Streetwear, where it all started. Good memory lane stuff. It would have been really grew-vay if Donna Karan had pressed Naomi into service. And why not bring CHRISTY, LINDA and the rest of the gang, too. Fun! Yes! - YOURS TRULY

Tracy Reese
Photos by Frazer Harrison/Getty Images.

THRIFT shop chic. That's the notion that the mind keeps revisiting as this Afro Cuban-influenced tableau is presented. Nifty frocks a body can't find any and everywhere. Equally striking is the awkwardness of many of the models in trying to radiate sensuality and energy that supposedly infuses the collection. Acting classes. - YOURS TRULY

Trina Turk
Photos courtesy of Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week.

TOOK a big toke of Trina Turk. Easy-breezy California cool resortwear with floral motifs. Pure fun; little substance. Nothing grabs this eye. I am wearing a TT sports coat that no one seems to notice - not that I am an exhibitionist … Rock on, Trina. - NEIL WOLFSON

Y-3
Photos courtesy of Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week.

STREET cred provided by pulsing cacophony of eight percussionists and a little bit of everything. Black, white, ombre rainbow, muted camo, feather in her hair and fabulous basketball sneakers: blackest canvas and pure white sole. Yohji Yamamoto's drum solo finale. Yes, meaningless. Yes, excitement. - MARIE T. DRISCOLL

Zac Posen
Photos by Neilson Barnard/Getty Images.

BEAUTIFUL gowns (and a few dresses). Exquisite, really. For another age, not this shabby one. How else to describe them: rococo? Baroque? Yes! Soldier on, Zac. Hopefully, the Hollywood starlets will appreciate your hard work and wear it best. - YOURS TRULY

Ralph Rucci
Photos by Frazer Harrison/Getty Images.

FROM the program notes: 'It is very important to show what the human hand can do. Ralph Rucci, from the David Boatman film, 'Ralph Rucci: A Designer and His House'" … After the show, a standing ovation. Does that not say it all? - YOURS TRULY

IT was a decent day in the boxes. Outside the boxes, too, on catwalks, in studios, showrooms and on runways, (including Christian Siriano in video at top).

Malan Breton

IT really does not have any continuity but is an unusual diversity of clothing. Everything from evening dresses to casual wear. Great hair and makeup in various styles. A mish mash. - NEIL WOLFSON

Katya Leonovich

LAST spring, the inspiration was the mermaid. This year, the designer is still on the water. Possibly caught up a riptide, for much has a tattered appearance manifested in layering and folds. A competent effort, if overmuch on occasion. - YOURS TRULY

Herve Leger by Max Azria

A sort of bondage and discipline aspect. The leather woke this reporter up - the promise of bondage and discipline. Overall, solid but not exciting. - NEIL WOLFSON

SHEER elegance promised. Sheer elegance delivered. Serenity joins elegance in the after-5 / evening wear motif. Behold, the work of a professional who takes care of business season in and season out. Notables: bright colors (poppy, pink, orange) and Chantilly lace. - YOURS TRULY
