God Save the Queens: Protecting the Mane of Palimore Triplets, as Well as Girls and Women in Every Corner of Country with CROWN Act

BY VW

WITH all of the problems that plague the United States, one of the very last ones we should be dealing with – in the 21st century! – is hair discrimination. Yet, it is a problem that persists. And you, you, you and you can help from the comfort of home and device.

Are you scratching your scalp, wondering what I'm on about? I get it. It’s a ton of botheration to even bring it up, but needs must, hence the Creating a Respectful and Open World for Natural Hair (CROWN) Act of 2021, for instance. But I will return to that shortly.

First, some background: Fellow Americans all across the United States – an overwhelming majority of them black, if media reports and at least one study are to be believed – have been experiencing discrimination because of their hairstyles. One might think such practices were left behind in 1919 or 1984 or 1999. Alas, no. They persist in 2000, 2010, 2019, 2020, 2021, 2022 …

It could be a situation where an athlete is told he must cut his locs to compete. A little girl is sent home because she is wearing braids in violation of school policy. A woman receives a job offer contingent on her abandoning her locs or braids. Little girls are bullied at school because of their hairstyles. Many of these same little girls begin to dislike their hair and desire straight hair.

This hair discrimination impacts mostly women and disproportionately black women who wear natural hairstyles like afros, braids, locs and ringlets. In fact, the 2019 Dove CROWN Research Study found in part that 80 percent of black women compared with 65 percent of nonblack women reported hair dicrimination.

The study also found that black girls as young as 5 have experienced hair discrimination (See "As Early As Five" above. It is a short film from Dove that dramatizes this finding). Yikes! This should not be the future of the Palimore Triplets or any little girl regardless of her hair type.

To paraphrase Marcus Garvey, “Don't force them to remove the kinks from their hair! Remove the kinks from your brain!

Not surprisingly, these outrages have spawned activism and legislation, giving rise to the CROWN Coalition and the CROWN Act. The former is an alliance of various non-governmental organizations, including Dove. Its mission is to push anti-hair discrimination legislation across the United States.

The coalition has had success. Currently, 14 states and more than 30 municipalities have passed hair discrimination laws under the rubric, CROWN Act.

You can follow the Palimore Triplets on Instagram (@palimore_triplets). Image from Palimore Triplets Instagram page.

The CROWN ACT, which outlaws hair discrimination (particularly the race-based type) in institutions and workplaces, passed by the U.S. House of Representatives in September 2020 and was introduced in the U.S. Senate in March 2021. There is a big push to get the bill passed in the Senate. President Joe Biden is expected to sign the CROWN Act, making it the law of the land.

I hope yous will get on board and support the CROWN Act (use the links below to act). Because in 2022, we don't have time for this.

2021 US Open: Halep Outshines Competition in Nike's Gold&Blue NY Slam Dress, and Here's Why

SIMONA HALEP (5'6"/1.68 meters) of Romania has the winning slam dress look because it is on-point where it matters the most. Debuted look in first-round defeat of Camila Giorgi of Italy. Photo by Darren Carroll/USTA

BY VW

NO,
your eyes have not deceived you. They are seeing double, triple, quadruple and more.

Yes, they have seen the same gold&blue tennis dress nearly every day of the 2021 US Open. On a different player. Many different players, from Marketa Vondrousova of the Czech Republic to Amanda Anisimova of the United States.

The dress is a pandemic at this year's US Open and the vector is Nike.

That gold&blue number is called the Nike Fall NY Slam Dress. Besides binary blue and university gold, it comes in gorge green. The slam dress in the two color schemes is the lone style in dresses available to Nike-sponsored WTA players.

MARKETA VONDROUSOVA (5'8"/1.73 meters) of the Czech Republic looks good in the slam dress but could have benefited from a more supportive bra. Or should she stand up straighter? Debuted look in first-round defeat of Elena-Gabriela Ruse of Romania. Photo by Brad Penner/USTA

Does this uniformity — Nike is hardly alone (Adidas, among others) — signal the beginning of the end of the days when major players got the bespoke treatment and everybody else threw on whatever they could find? Let's hope not! At this year's open, Nike-sponsored Naomi Osaka of Japan may be one of a very few players who was presented with a tennis outfit, a gold dress designed especially for her.

This situation with the attire in a largely individual sport is yet another aspect of this year's tournament that may have Serena, Venus, Rafa and Roger shaking their head.

KATIE BOULTER (5'11"/1.80 meters) of the UK has perfect bra support and imperfect length in the slam dress. Debuted look in first-round loss to Liudmila Samsonova of Russia. Photo by Kathryn Riley/USTA

An attractive frock, the dress is a throwback look to the tennis fashions of the '80s. This is most apparent in its A-line shape and sleevelessness.

Obviously, the green is far more subtle than the gold&blue. Indeed, the latter catches the eye because of the bright, brash bold gold in its DNA. Much like New York. Seeing it over and over again, however, begs the question, "Who wore it best?"

PETRA KVITOVA (6'0"/1.83 meters) of the Czech Republic, like most of the really tall women, wants a smidgen more leg coverage in the slam dress. Debuted look in first-round defeat of Polona Hercog of Slovenia. Photo by Kathryn Riley/USTA

Before the answer is revealed, a few more remarks about the dress. It is no surprise that Nike constructed it with tennis players and court conditions in mind. For instance, an A-line shape ends with a flared skirt. This supports, rather than constricts movement, particularly running.

The dress is also constructed of a lightweight, breathable fabric, keeping sweating to a minimum on courts that can swelter.

AMANDA ANISIMOVA (5'11"/1.80 meters) of the United States would be en forme in the slam dress with more bra support and more length. Debuted look in first-round defeat of Zarina Diyas Kazakhatan. Photo by Garrett Ellwood/USTA

It has a crisscross bodice and empire waist. The latter detail is designed to minimize hips and tummy, plus maximize the breast. To really slay in an empire waist though, you need a killer bra that lifts the girls to high heaven.

Otherwise, it looks like you have no waist and your girls are down in the dumps. This has been an issue with most of the players who have sported the dress.

Because the navy band is positioned high on the waist, it is important to wear a bra with heavy support to prevent a sagging bustline that bleeds right into the band, choking off the waist and closing off what should be a sliver of gold directly beneath the breastbone and directly above the band. Virtually no one has pulled this off.

MARTA KOSTYUK (5'9"/1.75 meters) of the Ukraine is the 2nd runner up in the slam dress, with only a couple of inches or so holding her up. Debuted look in first-round loss to Maria Sakkari of Greece. Photo by Mike Lawrence/USTA

Another area of concern is the bunching at the waist, something the Nike designers should be able to easily fix. It could be using a less pliant lightweight fabric or using lycra/more lycra. OR specially fitting the dress to each player.

And oh, the length: It is too short on many of the players, looking more like a tunic. Most female tennis players are tall — at least around 5'8" (1.73 meters) and leggy. Again, an easy fix is customizing the dress to each player by adjusting leg exposure accordingly.

ANASTASIA POTAPOVA (5'9"/1.75 meters) of Russia comes up short just so length-wise in the slam dress. She also has more-than-normal bunching below the breast. Both easy fixes for that look of perfection. Debuted look in first-round loss to Jessica Pegula of the United States. Photo by Rhea Nall/USTA

Now, that ends the comment period. No one has looked hideous, but who has worn our gold&blue slam dress the best. Drum roll, please ... Simona Halep of Romania! (See video of her on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/p/CTm8QcMlg5i/?utm_medium=copy_link)

She is wearing a better bra, which does the necessary lifting and separating. And the length is perfect. On Simona, who is the shortest of the group at 5'6" (1.68 meters), it looks like a rather fetching minidress.

BELINDA BENCIC (5'9"/1.75 meters) of Switzerland is the bronze winner and 1st runnerup in the slam dress stakes, wirh only razor-thin margins separating her from winner Simona Halep. Debuted look in first-round defeat of Arantxa Rus of the Netherlands. Photo by Garrett Ellwood/USTA

Congratulations, Simona, you've got the look!

SUMMERTIME
weather is here in many places and the living is easy (as suggested in the famous tune by Gershwins&Co.).

Therefore, you will be spending more time outdoors – especially if you have been fully vaxxed. In the sun. Where you will need all manner of protection from its harmful rays. One word, then: hat.

A covered head can help protect you from any number of discomforts, including dizziness and migraines. Plus, hats can make you look cool and chic. Definitely a win-win. But whaddaya say to a win-win-win?

Yes? Good. It's simple. When you go hat shopping, patronize brands that are committed to making hats and all of their products in an eco-friendly manner. No worries. We have curated some brands for you. They are listed below. All you have to do is point, click and await delivery.

You are making a good decision. Because you have experienced and/or witnessed enough wild, weird, wacky weather to believe that something is amiss. To that end, if the environmentalists are right about climate change and all it engenders for our planet, then the least you can do is shop responsibly, no?

Off you go then ...

You've Got Skin in the Game (All of It), Nine Ways to Keep It Looking Its Best

Sky Organics 100% Organic Unrefined Ivory Shea Butter is good for the entire body, including the face. During the winter, shea butter provides more moisture for normal and dry skin than lotion. Image from Sky Organics website.

BY VW

‘TIS
true: If you look good, you feel good – at the very least, better. One thing we can do to achieve that feel-good feeling is to take care of ourselves, especially our skin. To ensure that it looks its best.

Offering pointers (nine) toward achieving that goal are a couple of experts from Houston’s top-ranked Department of Dermatology at McGovern Medical School at the University of Texas Health Science Center.

“All the stresses and excesses of the holidays can leave your skin in bad shape, which makes you feel low, too,” asserts Megan Rogge, an assistant professor of dermatology. “The challenge is that at the start of a new year, we all want to look great. The good news is that with a little extra time and effort, or sometimes just breaking bad habits, you can change your skin condition for the better.”

The annmarie organic bamboo washcloth exfoliates as it cleanses and is naturally woven from a chemical-free blend of bamboo yarn and charcoal bamboo. Photo from annmarie website.

Drum roll, please ...

1. TAKE A CHILL PILL
Stay calm, cool and collected because stress can cause and worsen skin problems. "Acne, psoriasis, eczema and certain types of hair loss all get worse when you’re feeling stressed," MR says. "Unfortunately, these are the four most common complaints of my patients. That’s why I recommend finding time to decompress. Practicing yoga or meditation is a good option, but even just doing breathing exercises can make a difference.”

2. OVERHAUL DIET
In addition to adding unwanted pounds, what we eat can also adversely affect the look of our skin, McGovern medical school clinical dermatology professor Rajani Katta says.

"Your skin definitely feels the effects of your diet choices. I advise my patients to eat more foods rich in antioxidants, especially fruits, vegetables, herbs and spices, since they've been shown to help combat the effects of free radicals, which take a toll on your skin."

RK, who speaks nationally about skin issues, also advises her patients to be monitor their sugar intake. “Too many sugar-laden coffee drinks, candies and desserts can elevate your blood sugar levels, which in turn can lead to collagen damage. This makes your skin less supple and more prone to ‘sugar sag.’ "

Water is essential to any health- or self-improvement regimen. Nuff said. Archive image.

3. MAINTAIN SUNSCREEN ROUTINE
Even during the winter, stick to wearing sunscreen. “Sunscreen," stresses MR, "should be an everyday essential. It’s often associated with being sticky and smelly, but most major skincare brands offer a daily version that is lighter and easier to apply. Even in winter, the sun’s rays can still emit damaging ultraviolet radiation."

She recommends a brand with at least an SPF of 30, "and placing it by your toothbrush so you don’t forget each morning.”

4. DRINK SUFFICIENT WATER
It is not necessarily eight glasses a day, but dependent on how much is injested through beverages and food as well as how much one sweats.

Says RK, "It's easy to become dehydrated in the winter. Unfortunately, beyond fatigue and other health effects, dehydration also accentuates fine lines and wrinkles."

5. REMOVE MAKEUP AT NIGHT
Sometimes, it's a real struggle to take off your face after toiling all day, but it is essential and beneficial.

"Any buildup of dirt or oil in your skin can leave it looking flat. It can also block your pores, resulting in acne breakouts and irritations,” warns MR. “That means always removing makeup before you go to bed and doing regular cleansing, as well as exfoliation, to remove the top layer of dead skin. This will help keep your skin clear and shining bright.”

Bananas have myriad benefits, including promoting heart health and improving digestion. And they are delicious. Archive image.

6. GET PLENTY OF SHUT-EYE
When we get enough sleep, not only do we feel better, we look better. “Being sleep-deprived can increase those dreaded dark circles. Concealer can help hide the issue, but there’s no substitute for shut-eye,” RK asserts.

Further, she adds, not getting enough sleep slows the skin's healing process. “Researchers have studied the effects of poor sleep on the skin barrier. In one study, volunteers who reported poor sleep actually repaired their skin damage more slowly than those who reported good sleep."

7. MAXIMIZE MOISTURIZING
The skin becomes dryer during the cold weather season. That is OK for oily or combination skin, and there are particular topical treatments for the latter. However, those with dry or normal skin should keep the skin moisturized with something that has more oomph than lotions, which tend to be water-logged, thus not conducive to good moisturizing, MR says.

Instead, "opt for thick creams to maximize results. Applying twice daily is normally sufficient, and you can help lock in moisture further by applying while your skin is still damp. This technique, called soak and smear, involves only patting dry your skin after stepping out of the shower before applying a moisturizer.”

8. GET SOME FRESH AIR
During winter in particular, we spend more time indoors. The air quality in indoor spaces can be contaminated by smoke from cigarettes, cooking and other things. "While many of my patients recognize how harmful cigarette smoke is to the skin and therefore don’t smoke, some don't realize that secondhand smoke and pollution can also accelerate aging of the skin," says RK.

Drunk Elephant Umbra Sheer Physical Daily Defense Broad Spectrum Sunscreen SPF 30
is good for all skin types. Photo from Drunk Elephant website.

"That's why it's so important to avoid these situations whenever possible, and to make sure you're eating plenty of antioxidant-rich foods to help protect your skin from pollution and smoke-induced free radicals."

9. NEVER GIVE UP!
“Setting a routine morning and night is crucial because most skincare regimens give the best results when they are consistently followed,” MR says. “But if certain products aren’t working for you, don’t be afraid to try something new. To give your skin an extra boost, you might want to use Vitamin C and Vitamin E serums to strengthen its defenses and improve elasticity.”

Here, patience is a virtue, she says. “Although it’s natural to want a product to have an immediate impact, it usually takes six weeks to be able to assess its effectiveness and start noticing any significant difference. So before giving up too soon, try to give any changes to your routine a proper chance and you might be pleasantly surprised.”

In short, stick to the gameplan and the skin you're in is only mere weeks away from an improved appearance.

Inside Their Minds: Re-Imagining 'The Phantom of the Opera' Mask 30 Times Over

The current principal cast — Peter Jöback (The Phantom),  Ali Ewoldt (Christine) and Rodney Ingram (Raoul) — and the original mask. Photo by Jeremy Daniel

BY TAMARA BECK

IS
this the ultimate re-masking: Zang Toi conjures up ostrich feathers and a white rose. The Toledos (Isabel and Ruben) stick with the number - 30 - albeit, in a colorful way?

This re-masking is "Phantom Fashion 30," the continuing celebration of the 30th anniversary of "The Phantom of the Opera." That milestone was reached on 26 Jan. for Broadway's longest running musical.

Isabel and Ruben Toledo.

With Phantom Fashion 30," fashion designers (30) have reinterpreted the iconic mask originally designed by Maria Björnson and executed by milliner Rodney Gordon.

The "Phantom Fashion 30" masks, including Chloe Gosselin's somber floral motif, will be revealed on 30 Oct. during an invite-only cocktail sponsored by Bank of America. An online auction of the masks also opens on 30 Oct. They will then be on display to the general public as of Halloween (31 Oct.) at the Museum of the City of
New York
for one month.

Chloe Gosselin.

The auction ends on 30 Nov. and proceeds benefit Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS. "Phantom Fashion 30" is a collaboration of the Council of Fashion Designers of America (CFDA), Bank of America and "The Phantom of the Opera."

The  complete list of "Phantom Fashion 30" designers: Badgley Mischka, Chloe Gosselin, Christian Roth, Dennis Basso, Edie Parker, Eugenia Kim, Gigi Burris, Ilesteva, Isabel and Ruben Toledo, Judith Leiber, Kendra Scott, Kenneth Cole, Lizzie Fortunato, Marchesa, Naeem Khan, Nick Graham, Nicole Miller, Pamella Roland, Paul Marlow, Rebecca Minkoff, Sachin & Babi, Sally LaPointe, Stephen Dweck, Swarovski, Tadashi Shoji, Tanya Taylor, Title of Work, Vivienne Tam, Wolk Morais, Zang Toi.

From NYFW Fall 2017 Day 6: Adrienne Landau Opens Utopian LANDAULAND and Everybody Is Welcome ... THE MUMMY Is Disentombed and Dressed to Kill at The Blonds ... Modesty Does Not Have to Be Dowdy If You Don Anniesa Hasibuan ... We like it When Miguel Vieira Puckers ... Is Mimi Prober Dressing the Stevie Nicks of the World?

YOU
can wave at the bride and groom leaving their Wedding on a horse and admire the lovely Mom & children. Next, head to the beach and join the Sun Bathers.

These are a few of the adventures on offer at LANDAULAND. Pray, tell, what is LANDAULAND, you ask?

It is none other than the utopia created for Adrienne Landau by true republican and event planner extraordinaire Susanne Bartsch, to celebrate the brand's 40th anniversary. No doubt, this spectacle will go down as the most clever presentation of New York Fashion Week: The Shows Fall 2017.

"At this point in time, we all need to rise up and continue embracing EQUALITY & INCLUSION despite all the social constructs," the designer says in the run of show. "...For fall/winter 2017, ADRIENNE LANDAU persists in celebrating and supporting LOVE, UNITY FREEDOM of expression!"

What an ingenious way to show one's collection of colorful and colorful fur (stoles, vests, jackets, coats) and a few sweatpants! Walk into the darkened, cavernous room and see the aforesaid newlyweds. To the left, along the wall encased in glass are fierce-looking Warriors of various tribes got up in fur, accessorized by exquisite, massive, headdresses. Go right toward the phone booth where a Graffiti Artist, in denim utility vest, is plying his trade.

Across the way along the other wall, the hot beach bodies are lying amongst ginormous Chiquita banana floats getting their tan on. Keep wondering the space and encounter the Working Girls and Club kids, all dressed appropriately for their respective activities.

Half the fun of being at LANDAULAND is figuring out who are the amusements and who are the ones here to be amused. All of the models (and some of the guests) appear to be drag queens, including Amanda LePore and Violet Chachki, whom the designer believes may be perceived as "strange" or "different." Choosing this demographic to model her latest collection could be economically risky, leading some to presume that Adrienne Landau is not for them. They would be wrong.

"I don't design for a particular woman - I design for everyone," AL says. Among celeb clients: Steven Tyler, Beyonce, Lady Gaga and Taraji P. Henson.

Equality and inclusion ... Do add LANDAULAND to your travel itinerary.

AS
each ensemble glides by, I am affixing my keyword to it: elegant.

The Zang Toi Fall 2017 on the runway on Day 5 of New York Fashion Week: The Shows is nothing less. Nor is it nothing more. A colleague laments that he has not “enjoyed Zang in years.”

I am not that distressed, but this collection, titled “Brilliant Royal Blue,” does not plague me with goosebumps. Many of the elements for a great collection are here: fine fabrics, superior cuts, pleasing silhouettes ...

What is missing, however, is that wow factor that the designer usually produces ... More shortly; enjoy the photos for now.

OUT with the blue; in with the new.

“They gave us a quote and I told them that I couldn’t afford that,” Nina Tiari discloses when this reporter surmises that she must have some serious backers to make possible a debut at the Fall 2017 rendition of New York Fashion Week: The Shows.

Not an offshoot Week. Not an emerging label showing in the hinterlands during fashion week. But showing at one of the official venues – Skylight Clarkson.

“We did everything,” down to arranging for food, she recalls during our chat at her afterparty at The Bowery Hotel. “I wasn’t even nervous – everything was done – I was triple-checking things.”

Not at all a bad way to start. Watching NT's very first collection, inspired by the modern woman, I am impressed with the construction and her tweaks to familiar garments, making them seem fresh and new … More shortly; enjoy the photos for now.

AFTER
a few seasons of dragging her feet, someone is now doing a happy dance, for Custo Barcelona is back and has turned the light way up for Fall 2017.

From the Fall 2017 Custo Barcelona collection. Photos by VW.

Meanwhile, emerging label Saku shows some promise (the flounces are adorable), but the collection is too elementary (for instance, bedazzle those pants a bit more) and lacks enough oomph (simple can also tend toward boring). Emerged out of Parsons School of Design a few months ago was Lujin Zhang. She knows her way around asymmetry, deconstruction and repurposing.

Elsewhere, Marcel Ostertag is among numerous designers this season at New York Fashion Week thinking about various protests movements spawned by recent shocking, troubling events. He has women on the move/march; they appear dressed appropriately for the occasion.

And that’s the way some of it was on Day 4 … More shortly; enjoy the photos for now.
